Basic Components of Your Car's Suspension

Understanding suspension and its impact on your vehicle starts with understanding its basic components.  Your ability to control your car and the reduction of vibrations inside the cabin are dependent on all of these:

Springs – When you hit a bump or hole in the road, the coil or leaf springs in the suspension take the brunt of the force.  If you're looking for handling, you want tightly wound springs.  If you're looking for a smooth ride, you want loosely wound springs.

Shocks – The shocks, or shock absorbers, are responsible for handling the rebound from the springs that are also part of the suspension system.

Struts – The struts hold the spring and the shock absorbers.  They are the connection between the wheels and your car.  Struts need to be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles to keep your car running well.

Tires – The tires are the final part of the suspension.  If they aren't properly inflated or balanced, your car will not handle well.

Common Signs of Suspension Problems

How can you tell if your suspension needs a little assistance from our mechanics?  Some signs to watch for include:

Push your weight down on a corner of the vehicle and let go.  If it bounces more than once, then you may have a worn shock or strut.

Notice if the car leans into curves when you are driving or if it pulls to one side when you're driving straight.  This can indicate a suspension problem.

Check the tread. Do you see scallops or cupping?  This can indicate uneven wear, which can be due to suspension problems.
